Opera

The Italian opera is one of the most famous all over the world. It was born in Italy around the 15th century and since then, the Italian opera has continued to play a dominant role until the present day.
Many famous Italian opera works, were written by foreign composers, including Handel, Gluck and Mozart. Works by native Italian composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini, are considered the most famous operas ever written and until today, they are performed in opera houses around the world.
Due to its tradition, Italy has a wealth of beautiful and historical opera houses, many still serving as theaters, and whomever should visit at least one opera house and enjoy a live performance in Italy.
The opera season goes generally from October to March or April but outdoor performances are held in the summer time.

Milan’s Teatro Alla Scala

Teatro Alla Scala, the famous opera house in Milan, reopened in December, 2004 after an extensive renovation. The theatre was inaugurated on the 3rd of August 1778, and since then, most of Italy’s greatest opera artists, have appeared at La Scala during the past 200 years. It is considered as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world.

If you are in Venice

Venice’s Teatro La Fenice

La Fenice in Venice is one of the most famous theaters in Europe. La Fenice first opened in 1792 but was twice badly damaged by fire. It has recently been renovated and reopened. La Fenice it is located in Venice’s San Marco neighborhood, the main square of town.

Rome’s Teatro dell’Opera and the Baths of Caracalla

Rome has a beautiful opera house that holds many classical dance concerts and opera performances. It was built at the end of the 1800, and the opening was attended by the Royal Family in 1880.
During the summer season, opera and dance performances are held in the ancient Baths of Caracalla, a spectacular setting for opera under the stars.

The Teatro di San Carlo in Naples is the oldest opera house in Italy and all over Europe. It was built in 1737, and it is the biggest theatre of Italy: it can hosts up to 1386 spectators. The theatre was the symbol of the greatness of Naples as a capital, during the time of the Southern Kingdom of Italy. Opera, ballet, and short comic opera are still performed at Teatro San Carlo.
